Introduction and guidelines

Introduction

Welcome to BeGrand.net – the website for grandparents

We are here to help you navigate your way through the great, yet demanding, experience of being a grandparent. This section will tell you a little more about us including key staff, how to contact us, and how we were founded. If you feel this page is missing anything, please contact us.

The BeGrand.net site provides information, advice and a welcoming community for grandparents. We have articles, factsheets, quizzes, surveys, resources, activities and helpful guides to making best use of the internet, written in plain English.

BeGrand.net is a partnership between three bodies closely working with grandparents or the Over 50s community. They are Opportunity Links, Digital Unite and The Grandparents Association. We also work closely with many other groups working with families throughout the UK.

We received initial funding from the Family Information Direct project, which is a project that is led by central government's Department of Children, Schools and Families (now Department for Education), designed to to support services which help all families.

Our staff have decades of experience, from their background with our founder partners and from the wide working world. Find out more about our key staff.

The site is free to use and will be supported by us, offering selected deals and partnerships with products and shops which you already use as a grandparent. You have the right not to engage in these offers. We reserve the right to alter the current policy of not charging to register and maintain an account.

If you are a company who wants to talk to us about getting your messages to Britain's grandparents, then contact us.

General site terms and conditions are available. And our FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) section will also help you find the answer you need. However, if you still have a question, please send us a note via our contact form.

If you are a journalist and want to contact our press office, then get in touch via our contact form (select Media enquiries from the dropdown menu). You can also follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube or visit our Press page.

If you are a support group that works with grandparents and you want to promote BeGrand.net to them, go to our Promotions page to download and print our posters.

We have a thriving community full of grandparents just waiting to share and talk to you. To join this community, there are certain terms and conditions you must agree to before we can let you be a part of it.

Guidelines

BeGrand.net community

If you register to contribute in the BeGrand.net Community you are agreeing to sign up to the BeGrand.net Ltd Introduction and Guidelines.

These guidelines apply to groups and posts, profile information, signatures, any other content on this site and participation in general. This includes private messages, which we have the ability to read, if deemed necessary.

We welcome posts and discussions but it is not possible for us to review and/or confirm the accuracy or validity of a message before it is posted. If you believe that someone has broken our guidelines or you have spotted content that may otherwise require attention, please email community@begrand.net with a link to the content and a brief description of what you believe is wrong. Alternatively – use the report this content function. Notification is voluntary and anonymous, but in no case should a user respond to a situation personally as this could aggravate the situation further.

Breaking the BeGrand.net guidelines

Any breaking of our guidelines is taken seriously and will result in appropriate action. All users who break our guidance procedures will be contacted by email advising them of why their actions were inappropriate.

BeGrand.net and copyright infringement

Do not post copyrighted materials (articles, videos, audio, etc) that you do not have permission to reproduce or distribute. For text articles, most of the time you may quote a small portion of the article (usually no more than one-fifth or one-sixth of the total) and you must link to the source (if online) or provide the source (if offline). Posting the entire article, even with the source, constitutes copyright infringement. This is not the place illegally to trade or distribute copyrighted (or those with questionable copyright status) video or audio clips.

BeGrand.net and cross-posting

Cross-posting is the name for when you post the same post in two or more locations within this community. Cross-posting is not allowed and will result in the removal of one or more posts. When posting your topic, please try to post it in the most appropriate place within the community. Identical topics posted in the same or different forums will be removed. If in doubt, contact the Community Manager for guidance – community@begrand.net.

BeGrand.net general

Do not do anything which you feel compromises the BeGrand.net site. BeGrand.net Ltd tries to maintain a grandparent-friendly atmosphere whenever it is possible within the main subject matter of this community. Please keep this in mind when participating.

Our users will be mainly grandparents who will have different experiences to share. All contributors are welcome and we ask that users respect the community as a whole.

BeGrand.net and inappropriate language

We require that posted content be in the English language, so that it can be understood by the majority of readers and properly monitored. Inappropriate language and material – which can include abbreviated versions - is not allowed and will be removed. If your post contains a word that is banned by the software it will be removed. If you feel that the banning facility is acting in error, please contact us.

BeGrand.net and inappropriate behaviour

Inappropriate behavior can result in your account being suspended or restricted. Begrand.net may discuss this with you but retains the right to suspend or restrict with no discussion.

BeGrand.net and images

Begrand.net states that images of anyone under 18 are not allowed to be posted in any group without the express permission of a parent, guardian or someone  with parental responsibility. You are asked to confirm this permission when you upload such an image and we take no responsibility for any image that is uploaded without such permission.

BeGrand.net and inflammatory situations

Respect all users. Please refrain from inflammatory and defamatory comments as well as flaming, taunting, and general disrespect. If you don't agree with what someone says, by all means say so – respectfully – and explain why. Don't just tell someone they're wrong. Do not make uninvited remarks about typos, duplicate posts, posting styles, etc.

In an opinion-based discussion, do not make statements designed to put others off taking part in the discussion. It is unfair to try and stop discussion. If you feel someone has posted in a way that breaks our guidelines, report the content; do not try to get involved.

When someone has clearly stated their opinion, do not say things like 'Are you serious?' and 'Are you kidding me?' Remember, this is not a debating club where people score points. This is a friendly discussion community. Allow people to have their opinion.

User engaging with another post, which breaks guidelines.

BeGrand.net will always enforce guidelines, and whilst we appreciate when members inform us of misuse, we urge you to refrain from responding to these posts as we believe that, responding to a post, which breaks guidelines, can potentially make the situation worse.

BeGrand.net and signatures

Signatures are limited to four lines of text. This includes blank lines and doesn't include images but can include links to websites. It is recommended that you use readable fonts and colours and that the size is not too large. You may mention websites and ventures that you are in some way involved with, as long as they are appropriate for this community.

Strong political and religious sentiments should be kept out of profiles, signatures, and other content.

BeGrand.net and long signatures

All website links must be kept within your signature in your profile not in any other content that you post. Anyone found to be posting excessive links to their websites or suspected of using their membership of the site as a method of advertising, without participating fully and sincerely as a member of the site, is breaking this guideline.

BeGrand.net and advertising

BeGrand.net Ltd has received start-up funding from central government's Department of Children, Schools, and Families. The site is free to use and will be supported by us offering selected deals and partnerships with products and shops which you already use as a grandparent. You have the right to not engage in these offers. We reserve the right to alter the current policy of not charging to register and maintain an account.

Should this policy be changed we will tell you about any changes by posting an updated policy on Begrand.net Ltd and sending you an email to inform you of the new terms.

You will have the right to discontinue your use of the service up to the day of the new policy taking effect.

Advertising and posts

Generally speaking, a post made specifically for the promotion of a website, product or service is considered advertising. Posts that send people to a website that you are in some way affiliated with, but which don't relate to the topic being discussed, are considered ‘spam’ posts and are not allowed. This applies whatever kind of website is being promoted, whether commercial,  personal, non-profit, etc.

General and unnecessary links will be tagged by us as advertising. If you are found to be posting links excessively to your site (or you appear to be seeking out threads where your link may be relevant, so that you can post it), your access rights may be reduced.

You may only post a link to your site/a site that you are in some way affiliated with if the link specifically answers the question that is being asked and the answer cannot be simply posted without the link. Even then, you must link directly to the page where the information can be found.

You are not allowed to include a link to an affiliate website that leads to you earning cash, banner impressions, credits, points, etc.

Recommendations and reviews are, however, allowed provided that they are not disguised forms of advertising.

BeGrand.net does not allow users to engage in surveys and petitions via the site. If or you are unsure of the validity of the content you post – please remember that all content must benefit the community and not the user personally.

Leaving BeGrand.net and removal of information

We know that people will have to leave our community (of their own free will or otherwise) from time to time and to that end, we do not delete accounts, posts, or other content posted on our community. All content is granted to us with perpetual electronic publishing rights because any content posted on this community becomes an asset belonging to that community even after you have left.

You may request an item of content generated by you to be removed at any time, however. We will then  decide when and if to remove this content from our community. If you wish no longer to be identified with our community, we will be glad to close your account and alter your profile information to remove all identifying characteristics.

After account closure, you will no longer be able to participate in this community and this action is not reversible.

BeGrand.net Links

When linking to outside websites, you must ensure that the content of the link is appropriate for our community. This includes mentioning or referencing a site, even if the mention is not hyperlinked. If you post a link and that link is automatically banned, it is considered to be an inappropriate link and you should remove it from your post immediately. If left, all posts that feature inappropriate links will be removed.
