How to register for an email address with Google Mail

With email (which is an abbreviation for 'electronic mail'), you use the internet to send messages almost instantly from one computer to another, no matter the geographical distance between them. It also gives you an identity on the internet that allows you to subscribe to services and buy things from retailers. Here's how to register for a free email address with one email provider, Google Mail.

Email from anywhere

All you need is access to an internet-connected computer. This doesn't need to be your own computer. Because Google Mail is 'web-based' email, you can reach your mailboxes from any computer, provided you've registered with Google Mail and have an email address and password. So you can use the computers in a library or at an internet cafe, for example.

Simple

Registering with Google Mail is very simple, although you need a little time and patience to go through the process.

Tip: It would be a good idea to print out these instructions before you begin.

In your web browser (for instance, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera), type 'www.google.com' in the address bar at the top and press 'Return'. This will take you straight to the Google website.

At the top of the page, you will see the following links: 'Web', 'Images', 'Videos', 'Maps', 'News', 'Shopping', 'Mail'. Click on Mail. On the right-hand side of the new page that appears, you will see a button labelled 'Create an account'. Just click on this and fill in and submit the online form that then appears.
